The True Value of Christmas for Families

5 Ways Families Can Make Christmas About More Than Presents

Long before Thanksgiving, kids start thinking about the Christmas presents they hope to receive. Teach your kids the true value of Christmas so you can make this special time of year about more than presents.

Start Family Christmas Traditions

Nothing gets the whole family into the Christmas spirit faster than revisiting your annual family Christmas traditions. It doesn’t matter if you already have a handful of traditions or you don’t have anything particular in mind at all, there are many fun Christmas traditions you can add to your family’s routine every year that will show them the true value of Christmas.

Buy Gifts That Help Others

‘Tis the season of giving. Show your kids how they can give gifts to their friends and family that help others, an excellent lesson on the true value of Christmas.

Get Involved in Charity Work

So many charities need extra help during Christmastime. And there are countless ways your family can get involved. Pack boxes of food at a local charity. Ring bells at kettles outside of stores. Help deliver Christmas gifts to the less fortunate Christmas Eve. Serve food at a soup kitchen Christmas Day. Or find charities that help children receive everything from new toys to free Christmas trees.

Donate Toys

It’s a great time to get the kids to hit the playroom and pack up boxes of old toys. You’ll soon be filling the room back up with new toys on Christmas.

Donating old toys can help many children. Many hospitals, local charities, etc., will gladly accept gently used toys.

Visit the Elderly

Not everyone gets visitors around the holidays. Take your family to a retirement or nursing home to visit the elderly.

Call the director of the home to ask when a good day and time to come over would be. Make homemade gifts or simply spend time talking to these people who have a treasure chest full of stories to share. Your visit will brighten their day and your family will leave truly knowing the value of Christmas.

Attend a Church Service

Last, but certainly not least, consider attending a church service even if you don’t think of yourself as a religious person. Churches have wonderful programs in place all year long, especially in December, which is a wonderful way to teach your whole family the true value of Christmas.

Call any church in your area and they will be happy to tell you the programs they have coming up, including Christmas plays, live nativity scenes and door-to-door caroling in your city’s neighborhoods.  This is an easy way to get your kids involved at church without feeling any pressure to join. There will be plenty of other families visiting this time of year so you’ll fit right in.
